Okolona was approved as a Mississippi Small Town Main Street community in June 2000.
The Main Street Program is built upon a four-point approach, which depends upon the full
support and commitment of public and private sectors. The four points are organization,
promotion, design, and economic-restructuring.
- Organization works to strengthen the relationships among the leadership of elected officials, business and community leadership and assist in the effective management of resources within the central business district.
- Promotion works to improve and unify the image of downtown and to market it as a destination.
- Design works toward the improvement of downtown's physical appearance by assisting in the careful refurbishing of buildings, signs and public areas.
- Economic Restructuring works to redefine downtown's position in the local trade area by recruiting new and complementary businesses.
